Our Town: Brantford
Our Town. the WNED-TV series, came to Brantford in October to produce a scrapbook of the city. One of the segments will be a feature of the Dufferin Tennis and Lawn Bowling Club. Thanksgiving Day Closing Jitney
The last jitney of the 2009 season was bowled on the greens Monday, October 12. The Thanksgiving jitney had the following two game winners were Joe Godwin (20), Jean Hopton (20), Alma Kisser (20) and Grace Mills (20). One game winners were Ken Flaherty (18), Jim Thomson (17), Jack Taylor (16), Bobby Beazly (15), Eleanor Thomson (15), Art Lowe (14) and Jean McDonald (13).

Sunday Jitney
The final Sunday jitney was bowled September 27 on the Dufferin Club greens with 16 bowlers and 2 staff. Two game winners were Olive Martin (25), Joan Kay (24), Bunty Lowe (20) and Jean Hopton (20). One game winners were Jeannette McColl (19), Art Lowe (17) and Jack Taylor (17). Draw by Wilma Roblin and refreshments by Phyllis Gould.
Brantwood Farms Open Singles
Our final open tournament sponsored by Brantwood Farms was bowled Saturday, September 19 under perfect weather with 27 bowlers. Ron Jones, London finished in top spot with 3 wins (58+2), Michael Spadafora, Niagara Falls second with 3 wins (50), and John Rattray, Ancaster third with 3 wins (45), Yvette Vanderpost, Simcoe fourth with 2 wins (47), Frank Pring, Caledonia fifth with 2 wins (45). One game high Joan Way, Mt. Hamilton (37).

Nancy Tomkins Denture Clinic
Fourteen teams entered the Nancy Tomkins Denture Clinic Ladies Triples Tuesday, September 15. Tilly Mannen, Laura Ritchie and Elaine Clayton, St. George finished in first with 3 wins (43), Shirley Hague, Helen Dickson and Marg Ross, Woodstock in second with 3 wins (38), Hazel Reid, Elizabeth Smith and Nelda Hollatz, Kitchener third with 2 wins (41) and Evan Bingley, Marion Wootton and June Pinkney , Burlington fourth with 2 wins (38). One game high to the Simcoe team of Muriel LaPlante, Mary Faludi and Joyce Donaldson with 40+3.
A delicious luncheon was then served under the direction of Jackie Hainer, and her staff - Toni Zuidema, Madeleine James, Wilma Roblin, Bill Taylor, Bill Ellis, Jack Taylor, Art Lowe and Stan Plumstead. Greens set by Bob Valade. Draw table with Betty Dawes and Jean Hopton, Olive Martin sold 50/50 tickets; Evan Bingley was the winner. Madeleine James led the ladies in singing grace. Bill Taylor snapped pictures. Diane Lewis was busy videoing a section for an up coming TV program.

One game winners were Joan Gehring (19), Eleanor Thomson (19), Jean Hopton (18), Helen Knill (18), Grace Mills (18) and Jack Taylor (14). Thanks to Betty Dawes for refreshments.

The Ingham Monuments Ladies and Mixed Pairs was bowled Monday, September 7. Roger Abraham and Edith Cavin, Norwich finished first with 3 wins (45), Yvette Vanderpost and Matt Kolenic, Simcoe second with 3 wins (44), Frank Pring and Anne Harris, Caledonia third with 2 wins (47+1), Muriel LaPlante and Elaine Clayton, Simcoe fourth with 2 wins (43+14) and Marie Sutton and Eleanor Thomson, Dufferin in fifth with 1 win (35+1).

Ontario Novice Lawn Bowling Championships
The Ontario Novice Lawn Bowling Championships were completed September 5-6 at the Woodstock greens. Richard Learn, Roger Abraham and Graham Dorman of Norwich won the Men's Triples gold medal. Donna McLellan, Marlene Learn and Candace Teetze of Norwich won the bronze medal in the Ladies Triples event. Norwich represented District 3 in the championships.
Don & Betty Snider Mixed Pairs Plaque
The Dufferin Lawn Bowling Club hosted the Don & Betty Snider Pairs Plaque tournament Sunday, September 6 with the following winners:
1. Marie Sutton and Phyllis Gould (2 wins, 39)
2. Bill Ellis, Joan Gehring and Helen Knill (2 wins, 34)

Heart & Stroke Jitney
The members of the Dufferin Lawn Bowling Club bowled a jitney for the Heart and Stroke Fund with the following two game winners: Jean Hopton (33), Eleanor Thomson (23), Art Lowe (19) and Joyce Gerth (17). One game winners were Jim Thomson (22), Francine Lemay Beal (21), Alma Kisser (20), Jack Taylor (20), Bunty Lowe (17) and Grace Mill (16). A generous donation was made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation on behalf of the members. Thanks to Olive Martin and Loretta Beaton for refreshments between games and to Wilma Roblin and Marie Sutton for the draw.
District 3 Novice Playdowns
The District 3 Novice playdowns were bowled on the Dufferin Lawn Bowling greens, Saturday, August 15 under really hot and humid conditions. The winners of the Ladies Triples were Francine Lemay Beal, Joan Kay and Joan Deutscher, Dufferin (pictured
right) and the Men's Triples winners were Richard Learn, Roger Abraham and Graham Darmon, Norwich. Both teams advance to the Provincials, which will be bowled in Woodstock, September 5-6.
Thanks to Marie Sutton and Eleanor Thomson for the refreshments throughout the day and to Bob Valade for setting the greens. John Martin is the District 3 Chair Person, Betty Patience Secretary/Treasurer. Moe Cosyn, Woodstock was the umpire for the day.
Galerie Lumiere Ladies/Mixed Triples Tournament
The Dufferin Greens were invaded with lawn bowlers from the Norwich Club with five teams bowling in the Galerie Lumiere Ladies/Mixed Triples Tournament with a novice lead Tuesday, August 11. What fun! A hot and humid day with only four to five drops of rain in the third game.
The top four finishers were 1. Laura Ritchie, Ed Hunter and Pierette Boucher, St. George with 3 wins (43), 2. Gord Gilbert, Jan McLean and Susan Campbell, Paris with 2 wins (38), 3. Muriel LaPlante, Tony Vandenhurk and Yvette Vanderpost, Simcoe with 2 wins (37) and 4. Roy Spiegelman, Joyce Donaldson and Matt Kolenic, Simcoe with 2 wins (32).
Thanks to Betty Dawes with assistance by Jean Hopton for the draw, Bob Valade for setting the greens, Grace Mills, Alma Kisser and Toni Ziudema for refreshments. The winner of the 50/50 draw was Art Lowe of Dufferin.
Richardson Trophy Tournament
The Dufferin Lawn Bowling Club completed the Richardson Trophy in-club tournament with the following winners 1. Stan Plumstead, Jean Solis and Lisa Marie Hooper with 2 wins (35), 2. Jean Hopton, Betty Gragg and Bob Dolmer 2 wins (33+4) and 3. Marie Sutton, Wilma Roblin and Alma Kisser 1 win (36+2).
Tradewind Heating & AC Triples Tournament
A Ladies and Mixed Triples (Ladies Skip) Tournament sponsored by Tradewind Heating & Air Conditioning was bowled Tuesday, August 4. A total of 14 teams were registered with Diane March, Ron Dufeu and Ruby Dufeu, Burlington, finishing in top spot with 3 wins, 44+3. Joan Way, Carol Risidore and Leanne MacDougall, Mt. Hamilton were second with 3 wins (38), Marie Sutton, Bill Taylor and Eleanor Thomson, Dufferin in third with 2 wins (40+2), Nancy Hewer, Peter Clarke and Roberta Johnston, Burlington in fourth with 2 wins (39+4) and Laura Ritchie, Ed Hunter and Tillie Mannen, St. George in fifth with 1 win (32).

A Sunday jitney was bowled August 2 with the following winners. Two game winners were Bunty Lowe (26), Joyce Gerth (24), Olive Martin (23), Jim Thomson (21) and Betty Gragg (18). One game winners were Bill Taylor (23), Joe Godwin (21), Gord McDonald (21), Jean Hopton (20) and Velma Locke (20). Thanks to Marie Sutton for managing the "draw table". and Alma Kisser and Grace Millers for the refreshments.
B.Y.O Breweries Open Pairs Tournament
A rain shortened Open Pairs tournament was bowled Tuesday, July 21 with 18 teams entered. Finishing in first place were Gord Gilbert and Jan McLean, Paris with 3 wins (37+4). Marie Sutton and Jack Taylor, Dufferin finished in second with 3 wins (35), Peter Clarke and Roberta Johnston, Burlington in third with 3 wins (33+2), John Rattray and Joe Whorms, Ancaster in fourth with 2 wins (37), Yvette Vanderpost and Matt Kolenic, Simcoe in fifth with 2 wins (30) and Tony Vandenhurk and Mary Faludi, Simcoe in sixth with 1 win (28+9).
Carole Hendershot took charge of kitchen preparation - assisted by Bill and Laurel Ellis for the midday break. Draw was organized by Betty Dawes with Jean Hopton, greens set up by Bob Valade, and 50/50 tickets sold by Joan Deutscher and Olive Martin. Congratulations to Carole Hendershot, the winner of the 50/50 draw. A draw for three sets of men's products donated by Jeff Hewson with the winners Tom Brightman, Simcoe; Peter Clarke, Burlington; and Jack Taylor, Dufferin.

The McKay Travel Inc. Ladies Pairs Tournament was Friday, July 10 with two 14 end games bowled and delicious desserts. Hazel Reid and Bev Hitchman, Kitchener finished in first with 2 wins
(42+2), Yvette Vanderpost and Joyce Donaldson, Simcoe in second with 2 wins (39+4), Wilma Roblin and Jean Solis, Dufferin in third with 2 wins (24) and Olive Martin and Joan Deustcher, Dufferin in fourth with 1 win (31).

A Canada Day tournament of Ladies and Mixed Pairs sponsored by Tranquility Place Retirment Home & Apartments was bowled Wednesday, July 1. President Joan Deutscher welcomed bowlers and guests to the Dufferin Club. Bill Taylor led the singing O'Canada.
Mike Wagner and Shirly Filsinger, Kitchener finished in first with 3 wins (46+1), Gord Gilbert and Jan McLean, Paris in second with 3 wins (40+13), Mo Cosyn and Carol Bragg, Woodstock in third with 2 wins (45+10), Andrew Brightman and Stephanie Kent, Simcoe in fourth with 2 wins (41+3), Roger Abraham and Joy Abraham, Norwich fifth with 2 wins (36) and Lock Morgan and Dorothy Morgan, Ancaster in sixth with 1 win (35+6).

Canada Day Jitney

The Dufferin Lawn Bowling Club celebrated Canada Day on Sunday, June 28 with the Annual Canada Day Jitney. Bowlers were resplendant in red and white. Two game winners were Bill Taylor (27), Joan Gehring , Eleanor Thomson and Jim Thomson (tied with 11). One game winners were Gord McDonald (20) and Ken Flaherty, Bob Dolmer, Helen Knill, Velma Locke and Wilma Roblin (tied with 18).

Senior Games
The Dufferin Lawn Bowling Club hosted the lawn bowling section of the District 25 Senior Games on Thursday, June 4. Laura Ritchie, Ed Hunter and Tilly Mannen, St. George finished first with 2 wins (32+2). Stan Plumstead, Marie Sutton and Jack Taylor of Dufferin finished in second with 2 wins (27), Tony Vandenhurk, Mary Falud and Yvette Vanderpost, Simcoe third with 1 win (27) and Art Lowe, Bunty Lowe and Eleanor Thomson, Dufferin in fourth with 1 win (19).
Brant Chiropractic & Laser Clinic Tournament
Eighteen teams of ladies and mixed pairs were entered in the Brant Chiropractic & Laser Clinic tournament under sunny skies on Tuesday, June 2. Trudy Geensen and Jack Surerus, Norwich placed first with 3 wins (46+2); Joan Way and Carol Risidore, Mt. Hamilton second with 3 wins (45); Peter Clarke and Roberta Johnson, Burlington third with 2 wins (40+2); Frank Pring and Anne Harris, Caledonia fourth with 2 wins (39+7), and Shirley Vidler and Julia Ferrell, Burlington fifth with 2 wins (39). Francine Lemay Beal and Betty Graggn were the top team from Dufferin, finishing in sixth spot with 1 win (40+1).
Thanks to Jean and Gord McDonald on kitchen duties, Bob Valade for setting up the greens and Betty Dawes and Jean Hopton for manning the draw table. The lucky winner of the 50/50 draw was Tilly Mannen.
May 31 Jitney
The Dufferin Lawn Bowling Club hosted the first Sunday jitney with drawmaster Wilma Roblin and Marie Sutton. Two game winners were Art Lowe (26), Carol Rees (26), Gord. McDonald (23), Jim Thomson (23), Nellie Flaherty (20), Bunty Lowe (20), Loretta Beaton (20) and Joan Deutscher (18). One game winners were Jean McDonald (21), Marie Sutton (21), Joyce Gerth (16), Alma Kisser (16), Joan Kay (16), Lisa Marie Hooper (15), Bill Taylor (13) and Eleanor Thomson (13). Honourable mention goes to Olive Martin.
Opening Day Spider & Jitney
Co-presidents - Joan Deutscher and Francine Lemay Beal welcomed bowlers and guests on a sunny bowling day. Mayor Mike Hancock (left) brought greetings from city council to the Opening Day of the Dufferin Lawn Bowling Club on May 18, 2009. MPP Dave Levac extended good wishes for a successful season as did MP Phil McColeman.
Mel Plant led the singing of O'Canada (right). The dignitaries delivered bowls for the Spider event. Winner of the Spider was Bill Ellis and a generous donation was made to Operation Lift. Seven greens enjoyed bowling an 8-end jitney with thanks to drawmaster Gord McDonald. A short meeting followed and a delicious pot luck supper concluded the afternoon. Dufferin Club Fire
On Saturday, April 18, vandals started a fire under some benches that were stacked outside the front kitchen window. Fire and flames from the burning benches burned the window area, pillar and part of the roof of the Dufferin Club.
There is some fire damage to the outside of the building near the kitchen window, some heat damage in the kitchen and smoke and water damage in the kitchen, hall and women's washroom. There was no electrical damage, but the phone line was affected. Police estimate the damage to be around $35,000. A picture and article about the fire is posted on the Expositor website.
The fire was extinguished before spreading through the rest of the clubhouse and the Open House is still a go for Saturday, May 2.

The Dufferin Lawn Bowling Club is part of the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association, located in District 3.
Across Ontario, there are a total of 16 districts and within our district there are 11 clubs, of which Dufferin is a very active club.
